How the MCR Works

The Roles

The MCR (Middle Common Room) is made up of your elected representatives (click here to Meet the Team!) in the roles outlined in the MCR constitution, currently we have:

MCR President (1/2)

MCR Vice Presidents (2)

MCR Treasurer

Entertainments (Ents) Officers (4)

Communications Officer

Welfare Officers (3)

Access and Education Officer

PGCE Officers (2)

Sustainability and Green Officer

We also have Liberation Officers (not elected, see below) each in charge of a different campaign, who work with the welfare officers in the welfare unit to fully represent all the diverse welfare needs of the Postgraduate community at Homerton:

Disabled Student’s Officer

LGBTQ+ Officer

BME Officer

Gender Equalities Officer

International Officer

Part-Time Students Officer

We also have ‘co-opted’ roles who are unelected members of the committee. Any role can have any number of co-opts. Co-opts and liberation officers are selected at the discretion of the role the co-opt is for, or, in the case of the liberation officers, by the welfare team.

Liberation Officers and Co-Opts are a great for people to get involved who don’t want to undergo the elections process (not for everyone!) or maybe are unsure about having more responsibility on the committee because the role can be as active as you make it, it’s almost entirely up to you!

The Constitution

We abide by the rules as set out in the MCR Constitution:

Meetings

The MCR has meetings once a week (once every two weeks if there isn’t much on the agenda) and they are attended by everyone in the Support team and Executive, as well as being open to all the Liberation Officers and Co-Opts if they wish to attend. Each elected member has a vote, so many non-constitutional issues are decided at these meetings. You can click here to find meeting minutes.

Open Meetings

Open meetings are usually held once a term and can be attended by any member of the MCR where they can vote on important issues (constitutional changes can only be permanently changed by a vote at a quorate open meeting). Other business includes adding or removing positions to/from the MCR. We often schedule things like Staff-Student meetings or Election Hustings at the same time as the open meeting.
